چکیده

ABSTR.ACT We will describe an Earley-type parser for Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAGs). Although a CKY-type parser for TAGs has been developed earlier (Vijay-Shanker and :Icshi, 1985), this is the first practical parser for TAGs because as is well known for CFGs, the average behavior of Earley-type parsers is superior to that of CKY-type parsers. The core of the algorithm is described. Then we discuss modifications of the parsing algorithm that can parse extensions of TAGs such as constraints on adjunction, substitution, and feature structures for TAGs. We show how with the use of substitution in TAGs the system is able to parse directly CFGs and TAGs. The system parses unification formalisms that have a CFG skeleton and also those with a TAG skeleton. Thus it also allows us to embed the essential aspects of PATR-II.

An improved Earley parser with LTAG

This paper presents an adaptation of the Earley algorithm (EARLEY, 1968) for parsing with lexicalized tree-adjoining grammars (LTAGs). This algorithm constructs the derivation tree following a top-down strategy and verifies the valid prefix property. Many earlier algorithm do not have both of this properties (ScHABES, 1994). The Earley-like algorithm described in (SCHABES and Josm, 1988) verifi...

A Predictive Left-Corner Parser for Tree Adjoining Grammars

Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) is a formalism that has become very popular for the description of natural languages. However, the parsers for TAG that have been defined on the basis of the Earley’s algorithm entail important computational costs. In this article, we propose to extend the left corner relation from Context Free Grammar (CFG) to TAG in order to define an efficient left corner parser ...

Tree Parsing with Synchronous Tree-Adjoining Grammars

Restricting the input or the output of a grammar-induced translation to a given set of trees plays an important role in statistical machine translation. The problem for practical systems is to find a compact (and in particular, finite) representation of said restriction. For the class of synchronous treeadjoining grammars, partial solutions to this problem have been described, some being restri...

Parsing strategies with 'lexicalized' grammars: application to Tree Adjoining Grammars

In this paper, we present a parsing strategy that arose from the development of an Earley-type parsing algorithm for TAGs (Schabes and Joshi 1988) and from some recent linguistic work in TAGs (Abeillé: 1988a). In our approach, each elementary structure is systematically associated with a lexical head. These structures specify extended domains of locality (as compared to a context-free grammar) ...

Parsing Algorithms for Grammars with Regulated Rewriting

In recent papers [4, 5, 8, 11] Petri net controlled grammars have been introduced and investigated. It was shown that various regulated grammars such as random context, matrix, vector, valence grammars, etc., resulted from enriching context-free grammars with additional mechanisms can be unified into the Petri net formalism, i.e., a grammar and its control can be represented by a Petri net. Thi...
